Miss Lonelyhearts & A Cool Million

£6.00

Penguin 1st Edition, published 1961.

Two novels by Nathaniel West published together in one volume for the first time. Miss Lonelyhearts is a decidedly off-kilter, darkly comic tale set in New York in the early 30s. A nameless man is assigned to produce a newspaper advice column. It was meant to be a joke. But as endless letters from the desperate, sick-of-it-all and disillusioned pile up for Miss Lonelyhearts's attention the joke begins to escape him...

A Cool Million: The Dismantling of Lemuel Pitkin is a brutal satire of Horatio Alger's novels and their eternal optimism. Like many an Alger, Lemuel Pitkin leaves his home on the farm to seek his fortune in the Big City. By the time he is through, he has been robbed, bilked, thrown in jail, has lost his teeth, his eye, a leg, his scalp, and has witnessed a remarkable number of rapes and political riots.

Condition grading: Good. Some light foxing to both covers. Crease across bottom left of rear cover. Binding tight. The photographs form part of the description.
