Bernard Wolfe's 1950's classic offers a dystopian vision of life in 1990 following a devastating nuclear conflagration in the early 70's. Seen through the eye of a surgeon (Martine) who went AWOL during the war and has been hiding out on an uncharted island, the world has literally disarmed with males voluntarily submitting to having their limbs amputated as a commitment to peace. Over that time, prosthetic limbs have evolved ironically to provide even greater capabilities than 'armed' individuals.
The world is largely divided between the traditional west versus east. Martine learns that his musings kept in a notebook he left behind have formed the basis for this ideology. Unfortunately this ideology is not sufficient to hold back geopolitical aspirations and war does breakout partly as a consequence for control of a rare earth mineral needed for prosthetics. At the same, Martine is forced to examine his approach to controlling aggressive tendencies which involves prefrontal lobotomies that he has perfected during his time on the island.
